Chapter 16

Smith sat alone in his ATV, with only his foul mood to keep him company. All of his men had suddenly found they had something very important to do, and they had to do it somewhere that wasn’t near him.

The trackers were not having any luck, and he was down one man from a broken leg. The idiot had stepped in a hole in the creek and broken his ankle. Smith was tempted just to have him shot to show the rest of the team that he was serious. But he already knew that each and every one of them knew he wouldn’t put up with any bullshit. So, in actuality, he was down two men because he had to have someone help that idiot get back to the main camp.

That made him wonder for a few seconds if that Iranian asshole was still alive. He was pretty sure he was if the buzzards hadn’t torn anything important out of him yet. The coyotes would take care of that little problem tonight. It didn’t improve his mood much. He had really wanted to be there to watch.

Checking his watch again, he saw that only ten minutes had passed since he had last asked for an update from the tracking teams. They had better get a move on and find where their quarry had left the creek, as they only had about another hour of daylight. He chastised himself again for not leading the tracking team.

He had split the team after he had scouted the creek (really a fairly fast-flowing stream). The rocky footing and slick surfaces had discouraged him from sending any of the horse-mounted troops with the tracking team. While the trail didn’t follow the stream, there was a network of dirt roads that would allow the troops to link up with the tracking team once they picked up the scent.

Smith had moved the shooters to the nearest point along these dirt roads when the tracking team reported their position. That way, they wouldn’t overshoot their quarry and allow them to backtrack or change directions. The thought that Talon had double-backed by going upstream had crossed his mind, but he dismissed the thought and refused to second-guess his instincts.

Earlier, there had been some grumbling from some of the men as they passed by several farms that appeared to be thriving. They had asked for permission to do a little judicious looting, but he had told them no. But he added the disclaimer, not at this time. He didn’t want to fire up the locals until they had taken care of Talon and his crew.

But on the way out, now that was a different story. But he would be a little more vigilant this time. The last time they had moved through this area, they had almost got their collective asses handed to them.

Milo, that was the name he had been searching his mind for. So, it was connected to the old Sheriff. He had been the head of security for one of the mines back then, but he smiled at the memory of that night.
